about

"The best thing about Squirrel Jail is that it allows you to see a truly creative band at work. Judging only by their more refined releases, you would never guess that Invisible Hand tinkers around this much. As you listen to this tape you realize that the band writes their music as a process, discovering new ideas along the way. This is the way great bands work, not knowing when happenstance will create genius but knowing that when it does, you’d better have the tape machine rolling!
A triumvirate of highlights, “Lowbaude”, “Flange”, and “Squatters Rights (Slumlord Millionaire)” showcases Invisible Hand at their guitar-driven, pop-smart best. Other tracks, like “Everything’s Fair Game” get a little more spacey, with echoey keys and laconic tempos. Noise passages pop up here and there. “Wounded Eels” brings the freakout and “Lies, Lies, Lies” sounds so wonderfully crappy I can’t describe it. So does “Sniff That (I can not pop)”. In the WTF department, “Prince Bolan Returns from Battle” sounds like David Bowie circa Young Americans filtered heavily through Of Montreal’s The Sunlandic Twins. It’s the jam. I danced."
